Acne is a well known skin condition which affects nearly 90% of the teens and even more than them. Most of the people recover from this severe condition without any post-effects made. What about the rest? These people suffer from the scarring -"The acne scars". Though there are many topical beauty care products, the effectiveness may be less. The best acne scar treatment can be found within the skin resurfacing and some of the surgical procedures available. These processes provide you the maximum benefit in blemishing the acne scars.

Whenever acne vanishes by itself or by some cream-treatment, it leaves back the scar, which may be a red pigmented mark and still worse it may turn black. This is actually not an acne scar, but a series of post-acne changes. The healing process takes nearly 6-12 months after acne vanished. If there will be no development of acnes over that particular area, the skin will turn normal within few months.

The unwanted exposure of skin to the sunlight may cause the skin to get damaged, which will ultimately result in delayed healing. Hence it is necessary to wear a sun-screen before you move out. The next best acne scar treatment can be termed to the usage of tretinoin which is complex of Retin-A and Renova plusAvita. This compound speed the remake of the skin and help in diminishing the acne scar. Further more, the correct use of some of antibiotic compounds like Alpha-Hydroxy Acids or Beta-Hydroxy Acid (BHA) comprises of exact measure of the pH which ultimately results in the softening skin.

Peeling off the scabs should be avoided 100%. If the scabs are plucked or peeled off before its usual series of changes or before it gets dried by itself, then the scabs again starts the remodeling of the skin and the process repeats from the first to form a new scab. Hence the drying process will take little more duration. Since the drying of the scab is really important in the treatment of acne scars, using an anti-oxidant makes the post-acne changes and also scars to diminish. The next best acne scar treatment will be the application of vitamin E which when its applied over the face containing acne scars, the acne scars shall be blemished slowly within few weeks.

Acne may appear on face or shoulders or even neck or back and front shoulders. The Acne vulgaris contain non-inflammatory lesions as well as inflammatory lesions but cystic type of acne is little severe than the Acne vulgaris. The acne treatments are available in plenty though the prevention of acnes are little tougher. These treatments reduce the production of sebum which even reduces the bacteria that is responsible for the infection of acne.

Exfoliating the skin with a gentle herbal mix may help peels away the dead tissue. This treatment must be used continuously till acne vanishes. Using a good effective acne treatment, consisting of herbal remedies may be beneficial.

Acne Scar Removal Creams - The Ultimate Resort For Scarring Problem

Acne scar removing creams are specially designed to reduce the intensity of the blemishes and sometimes, dispel the blemishes completely from the skin's surface. The market is flooded with an assortment of scar removing products, of which some may be effective, while others may fail to produce results. Hence, you have to be alert and buy the product that is apt for your skin type.

Acne scars and their causes

Acne scars are caused by two reasons - the first, is the increased tissue formation and the second, is the loss of tissue. When the acne scars are caused by the increased tissue formation, it is known as keloids and hypertrophic scars. These scars are not the perennial problem, and get diminished in size, overtime.

Again loss of tissue is responsible for ugly spots on the skin. Usually, tissue loss is caused by inflammation of the skin, which is encouraged by the trapped oil under the pores of the skin. Nonetheless, the modern technology has come up with innovative products, to help remove the blemishes.

Creams - The ultimate solution for acne scars

The purpose of the scar removing creams is to remove the scars permanently or reduce its intensity. There are different forms of scar removal creams, but the most common one contains a kind of acid, known as Alpha Hydroxy. The cream is abrasive and therefore is very effective in removing the top layer of the skin. The process enables to expose the healthy skin lying underneath and as a result you can minimize the scarring problem.

There are exfoliating creams which work wonders for the scarring problem. However, remember to apply the creams only after the pimples or zits completely disappear. Those creams which have the presence of topical Vitamin A brings miraculous results for your skin.

Prior to using these creams, make sure that the cream has the combination of various ingredients, such as silicone gels, vitamins, natural ingredients, botanical extracts and many more. These creams are usually available over the counter and therefore you need not visit a doctor.

However, prior to the usage of the various scar removal creams, remember that the creams have their own side-effects. Therefore, it is best to consult with a doctor and then seek to the cream, which is suitable for your skin.

Take Care Of Your Health With Herbal Supplements

Herbal supplements are generally made from herbs or plants, and these supplements are added to the diet for health purposes. Although many of these are not yet officially considered as drugs or medicines, some herbal supplements work the same way as drugs and can have harmful, as well as helpful side effects.

The use of herbs to treat disease and infections is almost universal among traditional, non-industrialized societies. Many of the pharmaceuticals currently available to physicians have a long history of use as herbal remedies, such as opium, aspirin, digitalis, and quinine.

The Use Of Herbal Supplements Is On The Rise

The World Health Organization (WHO) currently estimates that 80 percent of the global population presently uses herbal medicine for some aspects of primary health care. Herbal treatment is a major aspect in all traditional medicine systems, and a common ingredient in homeopathic, Ayurvedic, traditional Chinese and Native American medicine.

According to the WHO, 74% of 119 modern plant-derived medicines are used in methods that are similar to their traditional uses. Major drug firms are currently conducting extensive research on plants and herbs collected from the rainforests and other places for possible new pharmaceuticals.

The use, and search for, drugs and dietary supplements that are derived from plants has increased in recent years. Pharmacologists, botanists, and natural-product chemists are searching and analyzing many plants and phytochemicals that could be developed for treatment of many types of diseases. As a matter of fact, an estimated 25% of modern drugs used in the United States have been sourced from plants.

Are Herbal Supplements And Medications Regulated?

In the US, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the main agency that regulates herbal and other dietary supplements, as foods and not as drugs. This ruling means that these supplements have not yet met the same standards as drugs for proof of safety, effectiveness, and quality. A producer, for example, can sell an herbal product without proving that it truly works.

The labels on herbal products may not be complete or accurate. The active ingredients in many herbal supplements are not verified, and in some cases, the information on the bottle may not be the same as what's on the label. In the past, some herbal supplements have been tainted with metals, drugs, and germs.

As such, any claim a manufacturer makes about an herbal supplement's effect must be followed by a disclaimer, like: "This statement has not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease." Be sure to check product labels and avoid supplements that promise to cure specific health problems.

Be Sure To Take Herbal Supplements Safely

Follow these tips and precautions, in order for you to be on the safe side when taking herbal supplements:

- Consult your health care provider before using any herbal supplement, especially if you're taking other medicines, or non-prescription drugs, or if you're pregnant or breast-feeding. Don't take herbal products for serious medical conditions without consulting with your health care provider first.

- Make sure to read labels carefully. Purchase only supplements that are approved by the American Botanical Council's Commission E, a reputable committee that evaluates the safety and efficacy of herbal supplements.

- Talk with a licensed pharmacist or other health care professional if you have concerns, or further questions about an herbal supplement. Take note that the clerks at health food stores are only salespersons, not health care professionals.

- Purchase herbal supplements from a reputable herbal manufacturers. Be wary about products that are sold through magazines, brochures, TV, radio, or the Internet. Learn more about herbal supplements from reputable sources.

Laser Treatment - Ultimate Acne Cure

Laser therapy for acne treatment has proved to be very effective, and as on date acne sufferers are willing to pour their money to any extent, as they see a great hope to regain their lost charm due to acne. The treatment helps to heal the lesions and treat even the existing scars permanently.

How does the laser work? The laser treatment uses various “soft pulsing light” intensities and wavelengths which work to reshape the tissues of the scars by making raised scars sink. The redness of the skin around the healed acne pustules is lessened, which ultimately vanishes.

What do the home acne lasers do? They emit a low, red light of constant frequency which stimulates the collagen. With this process, scarring becomes less visible. The whole recovery process gets momentum.

Low light acne home laser does not emit or produce heat. It does not burn or hurt your tissues. On the top of it, you feel that you have had a fine facial massage, after each part of the laser treatment. Even your existing fine lines and wrinkles are tamed by the laser. So, at the inflammatory stage of the treatment itself, the laser treatment does the job as per your expectations.

Positive results begin to show after 3 to 6 weeks after the laser treatment. Your co-operation in the consistency and continuity of the treatment also matters. If you have a half-hearted approach the results will also be incomplete.

Some dermatologists have a double track strategy to tackle acne. They combine laser therapy, which is also known as microdermabrasion, along with oral antibiotics to get immediate positive results.

Below are some of the laser treatments available in the market:

Nonablative lasers
Reaches underneath the skin and stimulate collagen growth. This helps tighten the underlying skin. It leaves some good after effects. They are- reduction in fine lines, good skin tone and appreciable change in skin appearance. Therefore, this is an excellent acne blemish laser treatment.

Erbium Lasers
In this treatment, water molecules in the skin, take on the heat. This treatment is good to those persons with shallow or moderate blemishes and facial wrinkles. Zits are also treated with this type of laser.

Carbon Dioxide Lasers
These lasers give short bursts of high energy light to the skin. Damaged tissue is treated layer by layer. It is good for removing all types of zits. Many consider this to be the top quality acne treatment.

The side effects of the laser treatment are negligible as compared to the gains. The side effects reported are, skin discoloration, skin crusting and in a few cases, swelling.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM)

Complementary and Alternative Medicine s (CAM, in short) is a topic of common discussion these days. They say practices and products used or intended to be used for treating a patient that are not a part of the "standard care" are termed as complementary medicine or alternative medicine. Even in the USA where this discussion is very much to the fore, the list of practices and products that are considered complementary and alternative medicine is continually going through a change.

Some experts argue that use of term complementary medicine or alternative medicine is erroneous. They say there is no alternative medicine and as believers in science and evidence, we should talk of medicine that is adequately tested and proven to be safe and effective and medicine that has not been adequately tested and proven to be safe and effective. Whether the therapeutic technique is eastern or western is irrelevant; our focus should be on the patient and his disease or ailment. Practices and products that are presently CAM but are subsequently proven to be safe and effective get adopted in the conventional health care and are not considered complementary and alternative medicine anymore.

It is interesting to find that while the medical profession may not be happy about "non-standard" practices and products - CAM - the patients seem to be turning to complementary and alternative medicine in increasing numbers, as some surveys indicate. A survey in USA in 2002 found that 36% of Americans used alternative therapy such as yoga, meditation, herbal treatments in the past 12 months. In 1998, a BBC telephone survey in UK found about 20% adults used alternative medicine in the past 12 months. It was found that use of alternative medicine had increased by 30% from 1990 to 1997. These figures do not include use of prayers as alternative or complementary medicine as practiced by many people.

In USA it is found that the number of colleges offering courses in alternative medicine is increasing. Naturopathy and osteopathy also are finding wider acceptance in medical colleges and universities. They seem to adopt a balanced view that they neither reject conventional medicine nor adopt the alternative practices blindly.

It is obvious that medical products and practices that do not fall under the term "standard care" do have a significant influence on the society. It is a measure of recognition of this fact that in 1998, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) was established as the Federal Government's lead agency for scientific research on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).

We shall look into some of these issues regarding complementary and alternative medicine and try to understand what these various systems of treatment involve.

Understanding Acne Treatments

Acne is a skin disorder. This disorder causes lesions, cysts, zits or pimples, and whiteheads or blackheads. A perfect acne treatment regimen usually entails several different products. In general acne occurs in the face, chest, back, and neck of the teens and young adults. Acne occurs in people of all races just as equally.

Acne treatment varies extensively from topical to oral. Usually combination of topical and oral medications fetches fruitful results. Depending on the severity of the disease, combination of oral and topical medications has been sought.

Some of the most common treatment options for acne are:

Benzoyl peroxide
This is an active ingredient for treating acne of non-inflammatory in nature. As it is safe for teenagers and adults, the product with this active ingredient is mostly adored by acne suffers. Benzoyl peroxide destroys the acne causing bacteria by acting as an oxidizing and antiseptic agent.

Benzoyl peroxide may produce desirable results within 2-3 weeks by reducing the number of blocked pores or comdones.

Benzoyl peroxide will eliminate the acne causing bacteria within 2-3 weeks without increasing the body’s self defense mechanism. Hence if you withdrawn the treatment of Benzoyl peroxide, the acne will return as this doesnot prevent the production of sebum.

Accutane
The active ingredient of accutane is Isotretinoin, the proven remedy for acne. For getting rid of acne, you are required to take 0.5 to 1 mg/kg of accutane daily. Accutane is available in pill form, powder form and topical form.

Action of Accutane
· Inhibiting keratinization
· Hampering sebaceous gland function

This action will occur only after continuous exposure to accutane at least for 2-week period.

Accutane acne treatment should be avoided by women planning on giving birth because of the likelihood of damage caused to an unborn fetus.

Retin-A
The main constituents of Retin-A are tretinoin and vitamin A. This is best suited for treating whiteheads and blackheads or comedonal acne. The results of this product can be noticed after continual usage for at least two weeks.

Action of Retin-A
· Promotes the extrusion of the plugged material in the follicle
· Increasing skin cell turnover
· Helps in drying up the skin eruptions
· Preventing the formation of fresh pimples

Retin-A may cause irritation and flaking on your skin at the initial stage but best benefit can be seen after 6-9 weeks. But noticeable difference is seen if Retin-A is applied for at least a year. Most of us discontinue to use Retin-A for pimples after a couple of weeks or months owing to the reason that it didn’t work. Don’t think like that! For getting rid of acne permanently, do use Retin-A continuously until the symptoms and the scars of acne wears off. Retin A acne treatment is highly affective for those willing to give it a chance to work.

Patience always pays off. Hence the complete results of the acne treatment are noticed only after 6-8 weeks.

Baby Acne Causes and Treatment

Acne is recognized as the number one skin problem in the world with teenagers as its more common victims. Acne is not limited to teenagers, but it can occur to people of all ages. Infants or babies are not any exceptions to that.

Causes of Baby Acne

Baby acne, also known as infantile acne, is not uncommon. Following are the causes of infantile acne:

Excessively Oily Skin
Although infants usually don’t suffer from oily skin, however, in rare cases, baby acne is caused by excessively oily skin. If you find that your bundle of joy has oily skin and has acne, you should wash the skin of your sweet little baby with warm water and mild baby soap at least three times a day.

Bad Nutrition
Since your baby cannot pick up bad eating habits at this early age, infantile acne due to bad nutrition is very rare. Bad nutrition can be the cause of infantile acne if parents are not attentive toward their babies’ diet. If you are thoughtful of your baby’s diet, then what is causing your baby to suffer from acne is --

Change of Hormones
It can happen to infants before their births. Mother’s hormones get passed to the baby via the placenta. Change of hormones can also happen when the baby has been separated from the mother. Mother’s milk is also a source of hormones for the baby.

Due to any of the above mentioned causes of baby acne, acne can occur to babies in as young age as 2 to 3 weeks.

Baby Acne Treatment
Many doctors suggest not using anything for baby acne, but just mild baby soaps with warm water on the baby’s skin during baths for cleansing the skin in order to treat baby acne. You should do just as the doctors suggest. However, if acne doesn’t disappear by the advised cleansing method, you can try, after consulting from your baby’s doctor, very mild over-the-counter 100% natural acne treatment lotions or creams.

Acne Prevention Tips

Prevention is better then cure. Daily activities affects your acne. If you could prevent it from happening, there isn't a need to find a cure.

The face is the most exposed part in a persons body. Taking care of the skin is essential to looking good. Knowing proper acne skin care treatment can help you banish this unsightly problem to make you feel better about yourself. Though Acne cannot be fully prevented as it is hormonal but the following should be adapted to avoid Acne:

  • Regularly washing your skin softly with a good cleanser everyday is the most important habit that helps prevent acne. But you should be careful not to do excessive cleansing as it may irritate your skin and can be hazardous to any acne you currently have. After sweating too much, it would be better to tenderly wash your face with an effective cleanser as the sweet mixed with oil coming out of the body can block the pores.
  • Bursting any existing pimples would do nothing, but simply cause infections that would pave the way for acne and scars.
  • Tight clothing should be avoided at all times especially when you exercise. Sweat containing oil coming out from your body will excessively get absorbed into your body which will block the pores of your skin and cause acne.
  • Adding multi-vitamin foods in your lunch and dinner would help your skin to be healthy and won’t cause dead cells.
  • For men, shaving carefully with a safe razor would help prevent acne from appearing on face. There are razors in markets that are of low quality and irritate skin, those must be avoided.
  • Find a regimen and stick with it. Pick your medication and treatment method and do not deviate from it unless you achieve measurable results or find that the condition is worsening.
  • Don’t use alcohol. Do not use products, like toners, if they contain heavy concentrations of isopropyl alcohol. This can do more damage than good.
  • Choose skin products carefully. Don’t get harsh or abrasive scrubs that can tear the skin and further aggravate the acne.
  • Wash after exercising. Don’t forget to hit shower after you’ve had a workout. The friction and moisture caused by clothing rubbing against the skin can create the perfect conditions for acne production.
  • Avoid constant touching or picking at your face. This is pretty self-explanatory. These activities can cause bacteria to get into pores and create acne.
  • Avoid Sunburn or SuntanMany of the medicines used to treat acne can make you more prone to sunburn. A sunburn that reddens the skin or suntan that darkens the skin may make blemishes less visible and make the skin feel drier. However, these benefits are only temporary, and there are known risks of excessive sun exposure, such as more rapid skin aging and a risk of developing skin cancer.
  • Watching what you eat also helps in your acne skin care treatment. Some foods have been reported to increase acne activity and you should stay away from these types of food. This mainly includes junk food and deep fried fatty foods. Fruits and vegetables are very good sources of Vitamin C and A, which helps clear the skin and improves its appearance.
  • Drinking eight glasses of water everyday to flushes out toxins that are harmful to the skin. These methods are not only good for your health and skin; they are also inexpensive ways for your acne skin care treatment.
  • Reduce Your Stress. Another possible cause of acne is stress. If you suffer from stress induced acne then you will notice that every time that your stress level increases your face breaks out. If you have this kind of acne then your natural remedy is to find a way to reduce your stress. This may include reducing your workload, meditating, exercising, or soaking in a hot tub. Use whatever works for you.
  • Detox Your Body. The liver is one of organs that can lead to oily skin and to acne. When the liver is not functioning properly it causes the skin to over-produce oil. This clogs pores and leads to break-outs. An improperly functioning liver can also lead to a hormonal balance problem which can also lead to acne break-outs. The best way to detox your liver is to change your diet. Eat fresh foods, fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, and drink lots of water. Eliminate junk food from your diet, and eliminate processed food. Try more whole foods, and more fiber.
  • Keep your hands to yourself! Excessive touching of the cause can cause irritation of acne. It is also possible for the acne to spread if you keep touching the face with dirty hands. It is very tempting to touch an acne prone skin especially if you are very conscious, however, the effects in the long run is far more damaging and it may become infected making it more difficult to clear your skin.
  • Doctors are available for a reason. Consulting with your doctor helps in your acne skin care treatment because they know what you must do in order to prevent acne. All acne skin care treatments or products must be reviewed by your doctor to prevent further damage to the skin. Harsh chemicals from certain products may cause irritation and swelling. In addition, if you plan on using natural remedies as your acne skin care treatment, your doctor must be aware of what you are going to use. You may never know but you may be allergic to a certain product.
  • Facials are not only meant for the pampered and the rich. Facials can help you clear acne and prevent them from spreading or coming back. Facials deep clean the skin and pores, which can get rid of excess oil and dirt. You can even use a do-it-yourself facial in your own home as your acne skin care treatment. A DIY facial is cheap and effective, plus, you get to use natural ingredients that are beneficial to the skin.
  • Change your sleeping conditions. Not to pursue a new style of sleeping but instead the environment on which you sleep has to be clear of bacteria. Can you imagine how much bacteria is on your pillow cover? Every time you go to sleep you expose your facial skin to your pillow cover and bacteria are exchanged from the pillow cover to your face and from your face to the pillow cover. Change it everyday. As simple as it may seem, this is one of the main places you acquire acne. Ever wondered why even after applying all the prescribed creams you still wake up to find a new pimple in the morning? Now you know why.

Acne is an inevitable force of nature. The hormones in the body, which makes getting acne unavoidable, cause the outbreaks of those unwanted spots on the skin. Early prevention, a healthy lifestyle, patience, persistence and proper hygiene are the most important acne skin care treatments and will eventually pay off with clear skin.

Acne Product For Your Types Of Acne

There are many anti acne chemical products available in the market. what are the preferred ingredients to be use by different types of acne? Read on to find out.

Is your skin generally oily or dry?

When you use benzoyl peroxide or other active ingredients commonly found in acne treatments, does your face get red and itchy?

Are your pimples small bumps or large and red with an almost cyst-like appearance?

The answers to these questions will greatly aid you in purchasing the best acne treatment for your condition.

There are many products sold for the treatment of acne, many of them without any scientifically-proven effects. Generally speaking successful treatments give little improvement within the first week or two; and then the acne decreases over approximately 2 to 4 months. Treatment should be continued as to maintain this improvement. Treatments that promise improvements within 2 weeks are likely to be largely disappointing. Laser therapies or quick bursts of antibiotics may offer a quick reduction in the redness, swelling and inflammation when used correctly, but none of these empty the pore of all the materials that trigger the inflammation. Emptying the pores takes several weeks to many months and can only be done with a quality acne treatment system.

Non-Inflammatory Acne
Topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide or if you only suffer from Non-Inflammatory Acne, then local treatment with azelaic acid, or salicylic acid should suffice

Mild (Inflammatory) acne
Benzoyl peroxide or topical retinoids as killing the acne bacteria is essential.

Moderate Inflammatory acne
Benzoyl peroxide or topical retinoids combined with other treatments such as salicylic acid

Severe inflammatory acne, nodular acne, acne resistant to the above treatments
Isotretinoin or other medication as prescribed by your physician.

Modes of improvement are not necessarily fully understood for all ingredients, but in general treatments are believed to work in at least 4 different ways (with many of the best treatments providing multiple simultaneous effects):

• normalizing shedding into the pore to prevent blockage
• killing Acne Bacteria (p. acnes)
• anti-inflammatory effects
• reduction of sebum production

A combination of treatments can greatly reduce the amount and severity of acne in many cases. Treatments that are most effective tend to have greater potential for side effects if not used properly and need a greater degree of monitoring, so a step-wise approach is often recommended. Many people consult with doctors when deciding which treatments to use, especially when considering using any treatments in combination. With the use of the right acne treatment, you can get your pimples under control and allow your great skin to shine through.

Acne and The Body

Be aware of the relationship between your body and acne.

You probably don’t know this yet but product wastes and toxic build up in your system is one of the main reasons why you have acne or why your skin breaks out.

You see, your body has 4 channels of elimination...your bowels, kidneys, lungs, and your skin. Your bowels and kidneys are the primary channels that your body expels product wastes and toxics through.

The only time that your body expels product wastes through your lungs and skin is when your bowels and kidneys are overloaded with product wastes and toxics or when your bowels becomes sluggish.

When this happens, your body will take some of the product waste and expel it through your lungs and skin (your secondary channels of elimination). Resulting in acne breakout.

However, you can prevent this from happening by increasing “fiber” intake. Fiber will absorb these toxins and product waste, and help your bowels sweep them out of your system fast.

So by taking enough fiber, you’ll be able to speed up your bowels transit time thus, preventing your body from expelling toxics through your skin and preventing acne.

So your next step is to start eating the type of foods that contains the highest amount of fiber.

What types of food contains the highest amount of fiber? Fruits and non-starchy vegetables.

Fruits such as apples, bananas, oranges, raspberries, and strawberries. And vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, spinach, parsnips, and potatoes. These contains the highest amount of fiber.

But this does not mean that you go out and eat as much of these high fiber foods as you can.

You should only consume enough so that your bowel transit time is between 12 to 18 hours. In other words, try not to consume too much fiber in day or else your transit time may be too fast causing nutrients to pass through your system without being absorbed. So if your transit time is under 12 hours, you may want to reduce the amount of fibers consume each day.

However, if your transit time is more than 24 hours then you really need to consume more fiber intake or else your body will start expelling these product wastes and toxins through your skin (resulting in acne breakout).
While consuming more fiber alone will not stop acne it can help in preventing acne. And that’s one portion of the pie in fighting acne.

Surgical Options

If everything else fails, this could be your acne solution last resort.

Often, when every avenue of medicinal treatment is exhausted, it becomes time for sufferers of persistent acne or more severe acne to seek alternative treatment methods. A dermatologist can help discuss the different treatments currently available including treating acne with laser therapy or acne surgery.

If you are considering the possibility of treating acne with laser therapy or surgery, you must take care to fully evaluate each of the processes, including the number of required treatments, the consequent costs, and the potential side effects of the treatment. It's also important that you select a process that is designed to deal with reducing the presence of acne - and not acne scarring.

Acne Surgery

Acne surgery involves making an incision into the affected area and draining the clogged matter. The process for blackheads and whiteheads doesn't actually involve surgery, but is often performed by a nurse, esthetician or dermatologist. A small, pointed blade is used to first open the comedone and then gently work the material out using a comedone extractor.

Severe cysts can be drained and removed by a procedure known as excisional surgery. The procedure should be performed in a sterile environment to reduce the risk of spreading bacterial infection and should only be performed by trained professional. If the cysts are not carefully extracted, they can develop serious infection and create scarring.

Forms of Physical Treatment

Exfoliation
This form or treatments involves removing the top layer of skin either chemically or with some sort of abrasive. Chemical peels are usually done with salicylic acid or glycolic acid. These work by destroying a microscopic layer of skin cells to unclog pores and remove the build-up of dead cells. The same effect can be achieved by using an abrasive cloth or liquid scrub.

Comedo Extraction
In this procedure, an anesthetic cream is applied to the immediate area of breakout. Then the comedones (blackheads and white heads) are extracted using a pen-like instrument which opens the top to allow the removal of dead skin cells and sebum from the follicle. The procedure is usually followed by an application of antibiotic cream.

Drainage
With many forms of severe acne, cysts can form under the skin and become very painful--even disfiguring. Often, the smaller cysts can be treated with cortisone injections which will flatten the lesion in a few days. But for larger cysts the only alternative available might be to have them drained and then surgically removed. Drainage can help relieve the pain associated with cysts and also reduce the chance of scarring. It is important not to try to drain cysts by yourself because of the risk of infection, which could lead to permanent scarring.

Using A Laser to Treat Acne

Laser treatments involve the use of varying wavelengths that are aimed directly at the affected area of the skin. These wavelengths pulsate against the skin and destroy overly-large sebaceous glands and acne lesions. Laser treatments remove the damaged outer layers of skin so that new cell growth can be initiated. The laser technician varies the intensity of the laser as necessary to effectively treat the area.

Despite all of the benefits, there is still considerable debate surrounding the effectiveness of laser therapy. Yes, it has been shown to be effective in improving the skin's appearance, but as with most of the other available acne treatments, there are some side effects. For example, patients can experience red, burned skin after treatment that can last for weeks. Individuals with dark-colored skin can end up with skin discoloration after laser treatments. Finally, the skin’s appearance can be uneven if the laser is applied inconsistently.

Turning to Prescriptions

If pharmacy medications doesn't help, you could turn to prescriptions

Generally, mild and moderate forms of acne can be treated with over-the-counter medications, but with severe cases the only recourse is to seek treatment from a dermatologist. In many cases, the doctor will recommend a prescription medicine to deal with the condition. It also should be noted that these kinds of medication can be more effective even when dealing with moderate acne than what is typically available over-the-counter.

There are two types of prescription acne medications - oral and topical.

Antibiotics

Commonly used to fight acne, antibiotics can be taken orally or as a lotion. Topical prescription medications may include ingredients such as zinc or retinoids. The most common antibiotic used for treating acne is tetracycline. It is used to kill the bacteria responsible for acne and also reduces inflammation. Treatment may take several weeks or even months to be effective and it is important to continue using antibiotics even after the acne has cleared up. A common side effect associated with tetracycline is increased sensitivity to sun light resulting in bad sunburns if the patient stays in the sun too long. Further side effects may include dizziness, hives, and upset stomach.

Women who are taking tetracycline may be susceptible to an increase in incidences of vaginal yeast.

Ointments and topical solutions

Antibiotic ointments actually have fewer complications than oral antibiotics. Like oral antibiotics, topical treatments are rather effective in killing bacteria that cause acne. If you use these ointments with other topical treatments like benzoyl peroxide the bacteria may not develop resistance to the antibiotics. This increases the level of prevention that you will experience.

Retinoids

Retinoids are a form of acne medication that is derived from vitamin A and can be applied directly to the skin typically in the form of lotions or creams. Topical retinoid medications are useful for treating blackheads and whiteheads by helping to open clogged pores.

Oral retinoids are used to treat the more severe forms of acne, because they have a better chance of dealing breakouts and lesions which don't respond to other treatments. Oral retinoids cause the upper layer of the skin to peel thereby opening pores. They also cause the body to produce less sebum – the substance which causes oily skin.

As with many other types of prescription strength medication, a number of serious side effects are associated with oral retinoids. They can also cause liver damage and depression, so regular medical attention is needed to make sure the patient is not being adversely affected by retinoid treatment. It is not unheard of for this kind of medication to cause birth defects if mothers are taking them when pregnant, so females should consult their doctor if pregnant, or suspect pregnancy.

Other medications

Birth control pills are sometimes effective in treating acne in women. They change hormone levels in the body and can reduce the acne causing effects of testosterone.

Over the Counter Acne Remedies

If natural acne remedies doesn't work for you because the chemical is not strong enough, you might try out chemical from your local pharmacy.

There are many types of over-the-counter treatments for acne. When dealing with acne, most people run to the local pharmacy and buy some sort of over-the-counter medication on the basis of recommendations from their friends or perhaps even television ads. Yet despite friendly suggestions, it is a good idea to consult with a physician before using any kind of over-the-counter medication. Even though acne is generally a benign condition, a doctor or dermatologist can advise you on what the best course of treatment might be as well as provide further suggestions based on the particular kind of acne you may be suffering from.

Considering the fact that a large number of acne treatment products are available, it can be hard to choose which one to try. You should not rely strictly upon the advice of friends or family because what may work for one person may not work for another. Further, you should have some background knowledge about the active ingredients in various acne medications, so you can make a better-informed choice.

One of the most popular ingredients in acne medications is benzoyl peroxide. Found in gels and ointments, it helps by combating the bacteria that generally help cause acne. It is also useful for removing dead skin cells that accumulate on the surface of the skin. It is these dead skin cells which combine with sebum to create blackheads and whiteheads.

Benzoyl peroxide has been proven to be safe and effective in combating lesions. It can also be used as a means of acne prevention once a breakout has cleared up by keeping the skin free from acne causing bacteria. The only side effect associated with this ingredient is dry skin, and this can be avoided by decreasing the frequency that it is applied on the skin.

Another ingredient commonly found in a majority of acne medications is salicylic acid. This prevents acne by clearing up dead skin cells that are accumulating too quickly and clogging the pores. If the medication you are using contains salicylic acid you should continue to use it after the skin has cleared up to prevent future outbreaks of acne. The only side effects associated with salicylic acid are dry, irritated skin.

Other ingredients

Besides the more common ones, there are other ingredients you may see in acne medication such as resorcinol and sulphur. Resorcinol causes the top layer of skin to peel and the dead skin cells that clog the pores are similarly affected. It is often combined with sulphur. Although it is not known how exactly sulphur affects acne conditions, it has continued to be used effectively even after more than 50 years. (Sulphur is often combined with other ingredients besides resorcinol like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide.)

Of all the ingredients that have been listed which are effective in fighting acne or preventing its outbreak, benzoyl peroxide is probably the most versatile. It can be used in cleansing liquids or bars, as well as lotion, cream, and gels which are applied directly on the skin. The cleansing products are used once or twice a day, while the creams and lotions can be used as needed. They should be applied on the skin around the acne as well as the pimples themselves for overall effectiveness. Also, you should try to avoid getting benzoyl peroxide in the eyes, mouth or nose, as it will cause irritation or inflammation.
